It’s Heritage Week in Ontario, a time to reflect on the importance of the Nottawasaga Lighthouse. This Imperial Tower, built in Collingwood between 1855 and 1858, is on the National Trust’s Top 10 Endangered Places in Canada.
The Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society is fundraising to save the iconic structure. The tower was recently shrink wrapped in plastic to protect it from further damage.
But the lighthouse, on Nottawasaga Island at the entrance to Collingwood harbour, has a long way to go before it’s fully restored.
Harsh weather and water damage had caused the tower’s outer face to crumble and fall to the ground. While the exterior damage is extensive, the inner core remains structurally sound.
